Dr. Yue Xiao’s Work in Plasma Technology

Dr. Yue Xiao is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. His research interest is low-temperature plasma (LTP) for material, agricultural, and medical applications.

Dr. Yue Xiao presentation is titled: High-Efficiency Dry Methane Reforming Using Stacked Wire Dielectric Barrier Discharge Reactor.

It is focused on developing advanced plasma technologies that convert methane and carbon dioxide into syngas, a valuable building block used to produce fuels and industrial chemicals. By designing innovative plasma reactors that operate more efficiently at lower temperatures, his work aims to reduce energy consumption, minimize carbon buildup, and create cleaner, more sustainable chemical manufacturing processes. 

His interest in science, engineering, and research began with a simple curiosity to understand the “why” behind things. 

The bright purple glow of plasma, led him in plasma science and engineering. He was fascinated that plasma chemistry provides unique reaction pathways that are advantageous for various applications.


Current research


One of his current research topics is using plasma technologies to sanitize medical devices, particularly medical endoscopes with long probes. The sterilization of endoscopes is challenging because the inner wall of the long probes is difficult to reach by the sterilant. They are designing and optimizing a unique plasma reactor that can fundamentally resolve this challenge.

His Ph.D. advisor, Professor Qing Hao at the University of Arizona, and his former boss, Dr. Chien-Hua Chen from Advanced Cooling Technologies, Inc., are people to whom he is truly grateful. Professor Hao provided him with top-notch academic training and support, while Dr. Chen’s mentorship shaped and transformed him from a young researcher into a project lead. He credits both mentors for their guidance and the important role they have played in his career.

He is motivated by the technological potential of plasma. There is still so much that is unknown about plasma, but even with our current understanding, many are already utilizing its benefits. Plasma technology has enormous potential and is something that is worthwhile to explore and discover. Knowing that there are still many possibilities to uncover motivates him to continue working in this field.

His goal is to advance the knowledge in related plasma applications to mitigate the gap between research and industrialization.

Dr. Yue Xiao encourages young people, especially those who may not see themselves represented in STEM, to remember that the laws of physics are the same for everyone, everywhere. He believes your hard work and achievements should speak for themselves. For students considering a career in plasma science, engineering, or other STEM fields, he encourages them to ask "why" and "what if" more often instead of simply accepting things as they are. He believes curiosity can be cultivated over time and can eventually become your inner motivation.

Dr. Yue Xiao recognizes NSF EPSCoR FTPP for funding his research and for organizing amazing events throughout the year to promote researcher communication, research collaboration, and education. The FTPP’s annual meetings have given him opportunities to present his recent research and connect. He describes these meetings as a great way for researchers to inspire and learn from one another.
